GMA Network, Inc. clarifies the case of its franchise renewal as it has been cited several times recently in light of the current situation of fellow broadcast network, ABS-CBN.

Formerly known as Republic Broadcasting System, Inc., GMA Network obtained its original 25-year franchise through Republic Act No. 7252 or “An Act Granting the Republic Broadcasting System, Inc. a Franchise to Construct, Install, Operate and Maintain Radio and Television Broadcasting Stations in the Philippines.”

The said act was signed into law on March 20, 1992; became effective on May 12, 1992 – fifteen (15) days after its publication in the Official Gazette on April 27, 1992; and as such, was valid until May 12, 2017.

On April 21, 2017 – 22 days prior to the expiry of the original franchise – President Rodrigo Duterte signed Republic Act No. 10925 or “An Act Renewing For Another Twenty-Five (25) Years The Franchise Granted To Republic Broadcasting System, Inc., Presently Known As GMA Network, Inc., Amending For The Purpose Republic Act No. 7252, Entitled An Act Granting The Republic Broadcasting System, Inc. a Franchise to Construct, Install, Operate and Maintain Radio and Television Broadcasting Stations in the Philippines.”

Given this, it is important to note that that there is no parity of circumstances between the two broadcast networks. And that there is no truth to statements claiming that GMA continued its operations despite the expiration of its franchise, which was in fact renewed earlier than its expiry date.

Hindi mo aakalain! Pinakatagong mga sikreto ng CBCP walang takot na ibinunyag

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines or CBCP had recently released, through Rappler, a list of online news portals or websites which, according to them, are unreliable news sources with unverified news content. With more than 29 websites written on the list, CBCP consequently received criticisms coming from journalists, political analysts, and even from the netizens. Despite the outcry from various concerned parties and entities, the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines remained firm to their campaign to ward off the spread of “fake news” over the internet. Moreover, CBCP never gave a public statement, they were totally silent about the issue as if they had no intentions to justify or defend at least, their so-called “propaganda”. RJ Nieto, the man behind Thinking Pinoy (TP) blog, which was included on the list released by CBCP and Rappler, made a simple recollection and to its surprise, was able to unearth some grie

Duterte wants Cebu teen rape-slay case suspect rearrested

President Duterte said Tuesday evening that he ordered the re-arrest of the 17-year-old suspect behind the brutal killing of Christine Silawan who was found mutilated and her face skinned off in Cebu early this month. President Rodrigo Duterte (JANSEN ROMERO / MANILA BULLETIN) In a speech late Tuesday, Duterte said he called the prosecutor who ordered the release of the suspect who was earlier reported to be the victim’s ex-lover. “‘Yung nakapatay sa bata, ni-release and they act upon orders of the prosecutor. Tinawagan ko siya pagka-umaga (The one who killed Christine, they released her upon the orders of the prosecutor. I called them immediately the following morning),” Duterte said. “Sabi ko i-recall mo ‘yang ano mo order ninyo of dismissal (I told them to recall their dismissal order) and have the guy rearrested,” he added. Last week, the Lapu-Lapu City Prosecutor’s Office ordered the release of the 17-year-old suspect because the arrest made by the N
